The original battery inside is likely dead, so a brand new battery will be included.Here are the steps to take to link the Pokewalker to your DS:- Load Heart Gold or Soul Silver on your DS- On the main menu of the game select connect to Pokewalker- Once you pick up to the screen that mentions go for a stroll, hold down L + down + X at the same time-You will be asked if you want to erase all Pokewalker data - Select Yes(make sure the red side of walker is pointed at the DS cart)-You are now ready to link the Pokewalker.
